How a Garbage Cafe Is Cleaning Streets and Feeding People

In this city in central India, people don’t pay with money. They pay with plastic. For every kilogram of bottles, wrappers, or bags, the Garbage Café gives a hot plate of rice, curries, dal, roti, and salad. With half a kilogram, you can get breakfast.
The cafe is run by the Ambikapur Municipal Corporation, and it helps more than 20 people every day. One woman, Rashmi Mondal, explained, “I can get food for my family in exchange for the plastic I collect. It makes all the difference in our lives.”
The idea is simple but powerful. It reduces plastic waste and feeds people in need. In other words, the café kills two birds with one stone. Thanks to efforts like this, Ambikapur is now known as one of the cleanest cities in India.
The Garbage Café has also inspired similar projects. The idea has spread across India, from Siliguri to Mulugu, Mysuru, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. Even Cambodia has joined in, giving rice in return for plastic waste.
